Tithonia diversifolia Giant Sunflower is a truly amazing plant! You will receive 15 FRESH substantial cuttings that are rigorous, exceptionally HEALTHY beautiful CUTTINGS, cut fresh on day they r shipped! I will ship Cuttings similar to the ACTUAL posted pictures. No pot, no soil, no roots, just fresh cuttings. The cuttings in the picture are representative of EXACTLY what you honorably will receive. I cut from my 6 mother plants and only send ones I see with plenty Of nodes! These are “Bare root” cuttings that were vigorously growing THE DAY they were cut. They will be triple washed, soaked for several hours to hydrate them as humanely possible, then the bottom 1/2s are wrapped in soaking wet paper towel —then plastic to keep them moist and the most viable they can be Until they arrive. They WILL wilt when you first pot them up. But within a week, kept moist, they’ll pop back like magic! IF YOU HAVE ROOTING HORMONE, it can make this more successful but if you get pots ready when u order and are able to get them right in good UNUSED BEFORE very wet POTTING MIX, prop up, tamp tight to soil and keep in warm room in very bright light, NO DIRECT SUN, then you have the best possible conditions for success. THESE DO NOT ROOT IN WATER. Tall plants in pictures are my mother plants. Bouquet is what I have on my tables near year round from them. I love this plant! It is an unusual perennial that gets great green foliage and bright yellow sunflower-like flowers on top of stems to 15 feet tall or more. They are butterfly, bee and pollinator magnets!! These unique plants are hardy to USDA zone 9b, possibly a bit colder, and they grow best in dappled full sun to part shade. I have mine in crazy hot humid south Fla in part sun- They make an excellent addition to your rare plant collection, a back of border stunner, an against the house focal point or just make a unique statement anywhere in your yard. They are stately and the flower is in my opinion incredible! An amazing cut flower, I have brought bouquets to friends and neighbors who can’t believe these gorgeous big, happy blooms! Tithonia diversifolia is also known as Mexican tournesol, Mexican sunflower, Japanese sunflower, Nitobe chrysanthemum, Bolivian Sunflower, and Marigold Tree. By any name it is such a good plant to have in your garden for myriad reasons! This plant can grow up to about 12-15 feet high where it shows off its beautiful sunny yellow 4-6” across blooms. You can lop it to make a shrub. This plant likes full sun or part shade in super hot humid Florida where it attracts a wide variety of birds, bees, and butterflies. This plant can also be grown as an annual anywhere and cuttings can be taken in late fall, potted up and overwintered inside/-and can also be grown as a tender perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11. I am in zone 10 and have had same stands of this plant over 8 years. Common Name: Mexican Sunflower Botanical Name: Tithonia diversifolia Family: Asteraceae Plant Type: Large, perennial, rangy shrub Origin: Mexico and Central America Zones: 9 - 11 (annual elsewhere overwinter cuttings or save seeds) Height: Height and width to 12' or more Rate of Growth: Fast Salt Tolerance: Medium Soil Requirements: Average, well-drained soil Water Requirements: Requires regular watering in dry weather Nutritional Requirements: Balanced liquid fertilizer monthly Light Requirements: Full sun for best growth and flowering part sun in hot south Florida Form: Shrub or tall singular plant. If whacked down can turn into a shrub with gorgeous healthy green leaves but flowers profusely when left to grow 10 feet or more! Leaves: Palm shaped, medium green to 6" wide Flowers: Yellow, daisy-like, smell of honey -- loved by bees and butterflies Fruits: Gray, flattened, dry, one-seeded fruit hidden by papery, brown-tipped bracts Pests or diseases: Young foliage can be attacked by snails and slugs but they kind of shrug them off & keep going. Uses: Screening, specimen plant, flower garden Bad Habits: Foliage damaged by frost, but recovers rapidly. They will not root in cold garages, patios etc. They need warmth to start NOT HEATING MATS JUST not in temps under day 68. They are tropical. —Easy to grow. - THESE DO NOT ROOT IN WATER!! The cuttings need to be placed in soil right away. Place about half of the cutting's length underground. Try placing it upright. I leave some leaves on to show u top. Make sure that at least two or 3 nodes are completely under the soil. These cuttings are sent with plenty of nodes!! Bury as deep as u can in your soil. Make sure the soil or sand is compacted around the cutting so that the nodes contact the soil/sand with no airpockets.please make soil very wet! It makes compacting the cutting easier and this will jump start process. I still water in again and squish the potting mix around cutting to be sure good contact is made. After that, water it daily to keep it very moist until you see new growth. Don’t fret if it wilts at first. Once established, water when dry especially if you see wilt. Do not overwater. They can be prone to rot but if hot they like to drink. Xeriscape plant, high drought tolerance. Can grow in poor soil but does well if enriched. Excellent useful flowering permaculture plant. —PERMACULTURE: This plant can be used to replenish soil that has been depleted of all of its nutrients. It is a good choice to replace expensive fertilizers. Just chop and drop where soil is needy. I have converted dry sandy, parched dirt into earthworm rich, black gold using the cuttings and leaves of regular trimmings from this plant. Called Organic "green manure" nutrient accumulator, thus used as a fertilizer, claimed to work almost a well as chemical fertilizers. Due to its ability to uptake elements, can be used to "mop up” or absorb metals from soils. Save and plant cuttings in pots to overwinter. Do not keep soil damp in ground as this can lead to rot. I send ONLY organically grown, no pesticides plants, (I raise butterflies) cuttings & seeds raised in my all organic garden. I am NOT a nursery. Just a passionate gardener. My plants are healthy, I ship only plants that I would be delighted to get. No bait and switch. And I shoot pictures of the plant(s) you are getting. When these are gone I list more ONLY IF I have. I have excellent feedback because I care and the plants & seeds I send reflect that. I also have this plant as a live fully rooted plant listed. (Please ask not listed) Plus other butterfly & pollinator plants listed. *****Shipped within 24hrs after payment with USPS First Class Package, - Guam, PR, Hawaii or other areas out of the continental US must be upgraded to priority mail shipping. I reserve the right to cancel order if priority mail not utilized. Mail takes too long to these areas.
