Description: This is circa mid to late 1800's antique cream glass rosary made entirely with brass metal. It has been a durable rosary due to the method by which it was made. It has been made and connected with coiled-wire brass metal to enclosed the loops that connected each decade and the first part of this antique rosary. This method seem to be associated with a German origin as described by other sellers. In many much bigger antique rosaries that have survived today, it is the same method that have been used, usually made with brass or bronze metal, which is perceived to be much older than those made of steel and the more expensive sterling silver metal or gold. This rosary shows signs of age and use but is very much intact. This item has also been cleaned to ensure that it is ready for your use. Having said that, I have been very careful to leave these items in their original condition, and simply to help these items to be more useful, and to prevent any possible deterioration so that the next generations can still enjoy them. Please study the details of this old treasure: Crucifix: this antique rosary is characterised with a moulded or cast brass crucifix. There seem to be some hand engraving on the top of the cross. It is attached to the whole rosary by a wide loop that is also protected by coiled wire around it. Size: 32mm x 17mm Loops: This antique rosary was meant to last a long time. It will also need a special skill to make these method of making a loop. The entire loop is made of brass wire. Some metal parts have oxidised but this rosary is in perfect working condition. The metal parts have been conditioned to prevent any further oxidisation. This is an antique piece and its patina took more than a hundred years to be acquired. Center Medal: this rosary was made with a devotion to the Miraculous Medal. The image is a bit faded, but it says: 'O Marie Concue Sans Peche P. P. N. (O Mary Conceived Without Sin, Pray For Us). The reverse side shows the symbols of the Miraculous Medal as seen by Saint Catherine Laboure following her apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For those who are not familiar, it can be easily seen online. Beads: this rosary came from Canada. The beads are made of porcelain paste. The colour is cream or near-ivory colour. The beads have the 'equatorial' band that is identified with Prosser beads. The English Prosser brothers invented a machine and sold the patent for it that made porcelain buttons, but that machine will only make one button at a time. A French man called Jean-Felix Bapterosses bought the patent for this machine, improved the machine that would make 500 porcelain buttons at a time and also made beads. One of the familiar beads we see today are what is called 'Prosser' beads particularly identified because of it equatorial band. It is argued that the Prossers did not make any beads or buttons but the Bapterosses family became the first producers of porcelain buttons, beads and consequently mosaic tiles in Braire, France. These beads were made for exports in Europe and for Africa. This beads 'story' is a long story but there is now a museum in Braire, France to signify the contribution of the Bapterosses in the history of beads making, as opposed to the popular belief that these beads only came from Czechoslovakia, Germany or even Venice. These type of beads were mainly made in France from the 1860s to the 1870s but because of economic depression some workers shifted to Czechoslovakia. And yet the Bapterosses continued making Prosser beads and started an international business alliance amongst producers in France and other countries in Europe. They also made strategic marketing programs that we call as 'global' trade today. This rosary could have been imported from France and ended up in Canada. Most collectors do not realised the story behind these beads but they are surely to be identified as having produced from 1860s to at least before the end of the 19th century. These type of rosaries are surely one of the oldest rosaries we see today.
