Description: Circa late 1800s, this antique collectible pilgrimage rosary is made of densed brown wood beads, coiled bronze metal wires and an engraved and hallmarked sterling silver main medal. It is also composed of the original silk pink ribbon that the previous owner has tied to the rosary. This rosary is a souvenir from the pilgrimage site of the Notre Dame de la Garde (Our Lady of the Guard) in Marseilles, France. The medal is engraved at reverse side with: 'Sir (shortcut for Souvenir) de N (Notre) D (Dame) de la Garde. Notice how detailed the medal is. This rare rosary is also decorated and tied with an original silk pink ribbon that unfortunately is very fragile. This ribbon is pre-1900, just like in any antique embroidery work and materials, is prone to fragility and deterioration. This rosary has been conditioned but not altered for it to be ready for your use. To compensate for this fragile ribbon and if you want to use it for your everyday purposes, (and since I have engaged in some silk ribbon embroidery before), I would be most willing to spare a similar pink silk embroidery ribbon for you to replace it. The image at obverse side features the Madonna and Child. The reverse side shows engraved markings: Souvenir de Notre Dame de la Garde. The Minor Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde is situated on a limestone foundation of an ancient fort at the highest point of Marseilles at 149 m. It is the site of the popular Assumption Day pilgrimage and also the most visited place in Marseilles. It is known for its 18th century Virgin and Child with bouquet statue located at the crypt, the Silver Virgin in the upper Church, and the huge gilded copper statue of Blessed Mother and Child on top of the bell tower. The tall statue of the Virgin Mary and Child is 11.2 meters in height. For those interested in architecture, the basilica is constructed in the Romanesque and Byzantine style. It is also ornamented with mosaics and several coloured marble. Due to its height and proximity to the coast, the hill called La Garde was also a lookout point and a landmark for sailing.
