Description: THE PENNY MAGAZINE May 25, 1833 Toucans Italian Wolf-Dog (Sheepdog) Durham Cathedral This is a paper which is over 190 years old. It is printed in a small format, measuring 7 by 11 in size, and is 8 pages long. The issue came from a bound volume and has typical minor disbinding marks at its spine, plus a slight amount of browning from age (see photos), but is still in excellent, bright and attractive condition. The cover page is given over entirely to a fine wood engraving from Le Vaillants Natural History of Birds of Paradise, of TOUCANS. Four varieties of the bird are depicted in the illustration: 1. Aracari Toucan (R. Aracari) 2. Red-bellied Toucan (R. Erythrorynchos) 3. Toco Toucan (Ramphastos Toco) 4. Black and Yellow Toucan (R. Discolorus) On the following page there are 65 lines of text to accompany the engraving, with an emphasis on the toucans enormous beak. The issue also has these articles: *** Durham Cathedral Two pages, with text and a nice large engraving of the Cathedral. *** The Italian Wolf-Dog An attractive wood engraving which measures 4.5 x 5.7 inches in size, on the back page. This is apparently a breed now known as the Italian Sheepdog. Underneath the a brief caption which states: In No. 62 we gave an account of the shepherds of the Abruzzi, and of the peaceful and courageous race of dogs that are employed there to defend the flocks against the attackes of wolves. In the Zoological Gardens there are specimens of this species of dog. They are of beautiful form, something lighter than the Newfoundland dog, but strong and muscular. Their fine long hair is white. In the above cut we have given portraits of these noble animals. *** Blind Alick of Stirling Over a page on a blind beggar who was famous for having a prodigious memory, and was tested on it by several professors. *** American Politeness A funny anecdote concerning the extreme ostracizing of an Englishman, Mr. Stuart, when he was in America and failed to surrender his seat on a coach to a woman: The universal practice is for the best seat to be resigned to her use. When he violated this unwritten law, the driver and other passengers were so outraged (all was uproar and confusion) that eventually the horses were detached from his coach, and harnessed to another, so that the trip could proceed without the British cad. He thus had to walk to the new coach amidst the jeers and exulting laughter of the by-standers. Luckily, Stuart adjusted to the local custom and later reconciled with the other travelers, so the whole party soon became perfectly cordial. (I guess because Americans are all just so darn polite, right?!) ********************** Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. The paper was compact in size, and every issue was illustrated with several fine woodcut engravings. 73 [gsp10196] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
