Description: An Acrostic and a Reminiscence from 1838 Philadelphia. For those not familiar with an acrostic the definition is a poem, word puzzle, or other composition in which certain letters in each line form a word or words. ( Mary West)A beautiful poem and reminiscence talking about past friends/ Lovers , sailing on ships, etc. This is definitely one of a kind beautiful thing. The drawing is really nice as well as the poem and reminiscence . Beautiful penmanship. Note how he talks about his childhood, sailing ships, ship captains and of course Mary West which is the Acrostic. This was bought by my mother who owned an antique store in Plymouth Meeting PA in the 60’s through the 90’s. It was part of a whole lot of historical items from this family. This item could appeal to a penmanship/calligraphy collector or some other type of collector. Not sure what this gentlemen did but maybe worked on boats. Parts of this could make up a song. Would look really nice on anyone’s wall and a great conservation piece. Really hard to find one like this and in such great condition. We had it put in this frame a few years back along with an acid free mat. Below is the Acrostic. Midst Life’s changing Scenes Oh! How sweet this to find A friend ever faithful unchanging and kind Rich Pleasures to mortals in friendship are given Yet kinder the friend which saints has in heaven With blessings unnumbered though life maybe stored Even though the disciple have more then his Lord Still Even though earth should a paradise prove This not likes the home of the weary above Reminiscence Although I may not travel back the years That time has thrown, like mountain barriers, Between me and my childhoods treasured lovers, Yet, as the far-bound mariner his home Prizes the more as wider he may roam This thus my thoughts, revisit those bright hours The mariner his home again may see But time, aye, locks the past, and breaks the key He loves his home though every generous gale May whisper speed and safety to his sail Upon a friendly sea, with naught to fear But is he wrecked upon a sterile shore? And hopes that love of hearth to see no more? And that remembered once no more to hear Childhood-Blest hours- we all were happy then Away , my fears - we all maybe again
