Description: THE WORLD AND THE MAN Written by Hugh Miller Thompson, Bishop of Mississippi. Published by Thomas Whittaker , New York. Fourth Edition is on the title page. There is no printing date, but was likely printed in the mid 1890s. Thomas Whittaker was a religious publisher and published several of Bishop Thompson’s works. A Catalogue of their publications is in the back of the book. This is a very uncommon book. Dr. Thompson was a well respected Episcopal clergyman in 19th century America. He was a prolific writer and sought after lecturer and preacher. Today we would find some of his views racist. (read the prefatory note below) From the Prefatory Note: The undersigned prints these Lectures because it is a necessity of the condition. That they may not, by some possible readers, be misunderstood, he would say-- He believes very strongly in Human Nature; especially in the Aryan Race, and his own branch of it; in “Heredity;” in the United States of America; but before all, and beyond all, he believes in Almighty God, the Father of Men, in the Catholic Faith, as declared in the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds and herein, in JOSHUA BEN MIRIAM, Who was born in the little town of Bethlehem, in Syria, 1895 years ago last 25th of December—... And finally, because he believes in God, he believes also in man (he worships a MAN). But, as a result, he believes in his own Race as the highest development of Man yet on Earth, and as bound, therefore, to rule, order, control and direct, most kindly but most firmly, all peoples not so developed with which it comes in contact. -The big brother ought to help and direct the litttle brother--sometimes, perhaps, box the little fellow’s ears! The navy blue cloth cover is a little soiled and spotted. It shows wear at the corners and edges. The book has been rebound retaining the original chocolate brown endpapers and original cover. There was some restoration to the cloth at the the spine ends. There is a small blue bookseller’s stamp on the upper corner of the front endpaper and first blank preliminary page. The interior is otherwise decent with no other marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is toned with age, but is not brittle. The hinges are good, but the front hinge shows evidence of having been repaired. It looks and functions much better than it looks in the photo I have provided.
