Description: "CIRCE OFFERING THE CUP TO ULYSSES" ORIGINAL LATE 19th CENTURY ETCHING by JAMES DOBIE (1849-1911) after the Pre-Raphaelite painting (1891) by JOHN WILLIAM WATERHOUSE R.A. (1849-1917) In this work, created in 1891 by John William Waterhouse, and beautifully etched the following year by James Dobie, Circe is seen offering a cup of a potion to Ulysses attempting to bring him under her divine control. Circe was an exceptionally iconic Greek goddess, noted for magical and whimsical abilities. She used witchcraft, including wand-work and cooking up divine potions with herbs and tinctures. She was essentially the paragon of archetypal mystical feminine sorcery. Her skills even extended to casting spells that turn people into animals. One story in the Odyssey even tells the story of her turning a crew of men into swine. Signed bottom right corner and fully inscribed in the caption area. The master engraver/etcher James Dobie (1849-1911) was born in Edinburgh, but worked for most of his career in the London area. He engraved landscape and genre scenes, and also mythological subjects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1885 until his death, and undertook several etching commissions from the "Magazine of Art" in the 1890s, including two other works by Waterhouse, "Mariamne" and "Ophelia". CONDITION: Very good condition. Well printed on thick wove paper. Margins intact, platemark clearly visible. A nice strong clear impression. Published in the prestigious "Magazine of Art" in 1892.
