Description: Beautiful hand tinted postcard of SS Matsonia, about 1915-17. (#1) SS Matsonia Matson.USS Matsonia (ID-1589) during World War I.Sold to the Alaska Packers Association and renamed Etolin.United States Army troopship USAT Etolin during World War II; placed in reserve fleet in 1946, scrapped in 1957. Matsonia, built at Newport News, Virginia in 1913, served the Matson Navigation Company only a few years before she was conscripted by the Navy for use as troop transport during WWI. Her luxurious interior was demolished in order to accommodate 3,000 soldier bunks. Matsonia completed six round trips to Europe prior to the Armistice. After the Armistice she made 8 transatlantic crossings bringing some 23,000 troops home. Once decommissioned Matson sold her to the Alaska Packers Assoc. In 1927 Matson launched the Malolo. In 1937 the Malolo was refitted and renamed Matsonia. (#2)This Matsonia was again conscripted for use during WWII! We often run listings that pertain to subject matter on Hawaii maritime history.
