Description: This tin Popeye Dime Register Bank retailed for a dime itself in the mid-1930s. A mechanical bank by King Features Syndicate, the bank celebrates Popeye the Sailor and his crew, including his girlfriend Olive Oyl, and Sappo. The very rare Popeye bank was issued shortly after Popeye the Sailor Man debuted in the King comic strip on Jan. 17, 1929. A fictional cartoon character, Popeye performed feats of strength and inhaled cans of spinach through his pipe. A rough character, Popeye has endured for almost 100 years, appearing in comic books, television cartoons, video games, and hundreds of advertisements hawking products ranging from spinach to candy cigarettes. Our Popeye bank, which measures 2.5" by 2.5" by .5" deep, has small scratches on the back on the hand as well as rubbed places and a little wear on the corners and sides. Overall, the dime register is in excellent condition with amazing graphics. The coin counter is probably not accurate. Most of us know Popeye the Sailor and his love for spinach. He is an American icon who continues to endure.
