The New England Whalers changed their name to the Hartford Whalers when they joined the NHL during the 1979-80 merger and later became the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997-98. The 1972-73 WHA hockey season yielded the only Championship for the franchise until the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2005-06.
