On 5,800 acres, just west of Raleigh, NC, laboratories dot the heavily wooded terrain that forms one of the nation's largest research centers. Here, scientists in white lab coats come and go, absorbed in tasks for such corporate giants as IBM, General Electric and Data General. But it is a lesser known tenant--the Burroughs Wellcome Company--that is getting the headlines these days. In 1982, Burroughs became the first, and so far the only, pharmaceutical company to receive federal approval for a treatment for genital herpes--the rapidly spreading venereal disease that is already afflicting up to 20 million Americans. During the past year, the normally low-profile company has been the subject of more than 1,000 articles on its new herpes drug, acyclovir, enough to fill nine scrapbooks. In Burroughs Wellcome Company's North Carolina lab, top photo, researchers load test tubes with plasma to study behavior of Zovirax in the cells. Bottom photo, shows close up of herpes plaques.
