Things are so bad this year that they can't even afford a turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner. Suddenly, Mary's wealthy and estranged mother Isabella (Jacqueline Bisset) comes to visit. Although she finds a kindred spirit in Mary's eldest daughter Tilly (Tatiana Maslany), Mary resents her mother's attempts to help them out of their financial difficulties. In the end, more than money will be needed to heal the emotional wounds that exist between mother and daughter in this moving and inspirational period drama. In the late 1880's, a family has lost their father in an untimely tragedy, and the widowed mother of three struggles to keep her family intact and to put food on the table. When their mother Mary becomes ill and is too proud to ask her estranged, very wealthy mother for assistance, Mary's daughter takes it upon herself to contact her grandmother and plead for help. Isabella's arrival causes an upheaval in many lives, but may also lead to reconciliation within the family. Old wounds are opened but eventually healed.
