Description: This listing is for the original painting that you see in the photos. I purchased it at an estate sale in Oregon. The woman running the sale said that it had belonged to her father who was a professor of some kind of Russian studies. She also said that he taught himself Mandarin and that he was into making ink brush calligraphy. Because it has seals, she did not think that this item was made by him. I think that it is probably Chinese and antique but I also wonder if it is Japanese. I am not an expert when it comes to Asian ink paintings. I leave it to the buyer to decide who painted it, when it was painted and where it was painted. The paper feels very fragile, pliable and thin. As the photos show, it has lines in it that indicate to me that it is laid paper which means that it could have been made previous to 1750. That does not mean that it necessarily was. The paper is an off-white light cream color. The paper looks old to me and the damage along with the efforts to preserve it in spite of the damage make me think that it might valuable or of historical significance. I do not know what it is worth. When I purchased it, it was matted with a clear plastic window that you can see in the photos. I temporarily took it out of the matting to inspect it and take photos. The paper that it is painted on measures close to 15 7/8 by 32 inches. The paper board frame measures close to 15 7/8 by 32 inches. The condition of the painting is much like you see it in the photos. There are tears, creases, and piecesof paper missing. There is discoloration and what looks the remains of glue on the reverse. There is a relatively even and light discoloration that runs along the edges that is abou1 3/4 of an inch wide. There is a wide line across the bottom left hand corner where the paper is distorted. Tape can be seen on the opposite side of that irregularity. The paper board frame shows some light signs of use. Otherwise, my photos should give you a good idea of its condition. I guarantee this antique painting to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description; please look at all of them. I allow three business days for shipping, but I usually ship the same or next day if possible. Please note that the lighting in my photos is uneven, and there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors; different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs "approximately" because no measurements are exact, and some things are difficult to measure.I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation. I sometimes purchase signature delivery for my more valuable packages because of the possibility of them being stolen off of a porch or damaged by weather. I often, but not always, ship the same or next day. Often, I have a double-walled box custom made for larger items, which might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually made from biodegradable materials. Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I do not ship on weekends, and I might not be available to answer emails on weekends. Thanks for looking at my ad.
