Description: Antique French Sterling Silver and Vermeil Gold Washed Mesh Purse, Two Compartments, Beads, Paris This petite antique sterling silver and gold washed or “Vermeil” mesh purse, an exquisite French creation, is beautifully woven of sterling silver mesh and has a small interior compartment. There are seven beads at the bottom and the catch is in the form of two beads. The interior compartment has a lever style catch. The frame is engraved with stylized palm fronds and is monogrammed with the initials “M.B.”. There is a ring for hanging. This mesh purse bears six French “Boar’s Head” hallmarks used in Paris since 1838 and indicating the highest quality of French sterling silver for small objects. It is stamped with the words “Breveté SGDG”. It also bears the maker’s mark of Moche & Cie, master silversmiths in Paris, located in the rue Poissonnière from 1884. The maker's mark consists of the inscription “J.M. & Cie” above the image of a skein of silk (a “Moche” in French). This piece is in very good condition with the exception of signs of normal age and use including a few missing links, not unusual for a mesh purse of this age, and slight loss of the gold washing on the lower part on each side.
