Description: BRADDOCK AT THE MONONGAHELA. Kopperman, Paul EPittsburgh 1992, 2nd printing of 1977 edition, Univ. of Pa. Press, hard bound in dust jacket, Fine/Fine condition, 6x9, xxvi, 322 pages, illus, map, appendices. --------- On July 9, 1755, an army of British and American soldiers commanded by Major General Edward Braddock marched toward Fort Duquesne, a major western outpost held by the French. They were confident of an easy victory. But before they reached the fort they were attacked by a much smaller force of French and Indians. Braddock's army was destroyed, its commander fatally wounded, and its cannon, supplies, money, and secret papers lost to the enemy. One of the few to escape unharmed was a young aide-de-camp, George Washington. Within days, accounts of the catastrophe began to appear in colonial newspapers and in official and personal correspondence. How the battle could have been lost became a topic of heated public debate. Paul Kopperman has used all of the known eyewitness reports of Braddock's Defeat some of them never before printed-to presentan exciting critical account of the battle. By comparing the various reports, both French and English, and by analyzing the perspectives and reliability of their authors, he is able to give a thoughtful evaluation of previous studies and to offer his own persuasive interpretation.-------- In his final chapter, Dr. Kopperman offers some provocative thoughts about the impact of Braddock's Defeat on the subsequent conduct of the French and Indian War, on the Washington legend, on American attitudes toward the Indians, and on British American relations before the Revolution. His appendices provide more than forty contemporary accounts of the battle, many of them printed in full, along with evaluations of their accuracy and significance. The book is illustrated with portraits of French and English officers and with maps of the battle drawn by eyewitnesses.
