Description: Burma RoadBy Nicol Smith with illustrations from photographs by the authorCopyright 1940First Edition You Can't Go ThereWoody and I lay sprawled in our bathing suits on the beach in front of the big hotel at Repulse Bay. Somewhere behind us, five miles away, over the ridge, was Hong Kong. We felt fine. It was mid-May. The Season of Rains was just beginning, and it had rained in torrents the day before; but now the sun was hot on our shoulders and it was pleasant to loaf there and look out over the China Sea and the dreaming blue Pacific beyond and pretend we could see San Francisco, six thousand miles away. But I couldn't keep quiet long. I saw up on my haunches and began smoothing off the white sand, with the edge of a sea shell, until I had a nice clean spot Then I began putting little pebbles on it, carefully spacing them. "Looik, Woody," I said. "This pebble is Hong Kong. This one down here is teh island of Hainan. Three hundred miles down the China coast to Hoihow. From there, via Haiphong to the south, go northwest into China again. That means another three hundred miles by sea and five hundred by rail, to Yun-nan-fu. Look, I'll put a second pebble here, for Yun-nan-fu. Over here to the southwest is Burma. See, this pebble is Lashio, in north BUrma. This wiggly line" (I scratched it in the sand) "is the Burma Road. Yun-nan-fu to Lashio, seven hundred miles. I'm going down to have a look at it. It ought to give me some darn good motion pictures, what?" Woody snapped awake, propped himself up on one elbow, and stared at me. He shook his head, slowly, mournfully. THen an exasperating grin spread over his face.
