Description: 22-Piece Charles Allerton & Sons Red ‘WATER HEN’ Child Miniature Staffordshire Tea Set, c 1886 Reference: Lorraine Punchard, ‘Playtime Pottery & Porcelain From the United Kingdom and the United States,’ p 89, middle for the pattern, and pp 85-93. This is a child’s miniature Tea Set transfer printed in an earthy red on a creamy earthenware in a pattern referred to as ‘WATER HEN,’ made by Charles Allerton & Sons, Staffordshire, England, c 1886. There are no marks on this set until you arrive to the saucers and plates which have the Allerton cartouche trademark containing the pattern name and number, ‘WATER HEN and 754.’ This pattern has a Water Hen prominently feeding in a marshland area with lilies and flowers in the foreground; there are two birds in the sky, and in the distance is a castle. This pattern reflects the Aesthetic period in which it was produced and illustrates scenes from nature that the Victorians adored. The Tea Pot, Sugar, and Creamer are the Octagon shape. This Tea Set consists of: (1) Teapot with Lid: 6” W x 3.75” D x 5.25” H Foot rim chip that does not show.(1) Sugar with Lid: 4.75” W x 3.5” D x 4.5” H Inner spoon dings that do not show when Lid is in place.(1) Creamer: 3.25” W x 2.25” D x 3.125” H Stable firing crack to the top of the handle.(1) Waste or Slop Bowl: 4” W x 2.5” H 1.25” Interior hairline that terminates at the edge.(6) Cups: 3.25” W x 2.5” D x 2” H(6) Saucers: 4.5” W x 1” H(6) Plates: 5.5” W x .675” H Please ignore the white glare reflections in the photos. This child’s miniature Tea Set is in excellent condition with the exceptions noted above. Transfer skips and smudges, glaze ponding, crazing, and additional minor typical firing imperfections sporadically may appear consistent with production at the time they were made, but nothing that detracts from the display value.
