Description: Candle Bush, (Senna alata), Cassia alata, Shrub Seeds Fast Growth, Showy Flowers, Fall Blooming, Shrub Border, Attracts Butterflies, Medicinal, Heat and Drought Tolerant Candle Bush is a fast growing evergreen shrub or small tree in frost free areas, but can be grown as an annual in cooler climates. It is native from the Tropics, including Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands and even tropical America. Candle Bush is an attractive shrub, named for its flower buds which grow in a column and look like fat yellow candles. Candle Bush can grow up to 30 feet tall and 15 feet across. The huge pinnate leaves are up to 30 inches long and composed of 7 to 14 pairs of large, oblong leaflets, each around 3 to 8 inches long and 1 to 4 inches wide. The leaves fold together at night. Flowers are bright yellow, cup shaped and carried in erect terminal clusters arising from leaf axils. The individual flowers are about an inch across. The candle-like flower clusters include open flowers at the bottom and unopened flowers with their waxy coverings at the top. The clusters stand 6 to 24 inches tall. The fruit is a straight or slightly curved, winged pod around 4 to 8 inches long. Candle Bush has a long blooming season from autumn throughout the winter or at least until the first frost. Late in the season, the inflorescence will have dry, brown pods at the bottom; green, still ripening pods above that; open flowers above that and waxy sepal-covered flowers at the top. Candle Bush is the food plant of some butterflies. The plant recruits ant bodyguards against these caterpillars. It has "extrafloral nectaries" near the base of the leaves, that produce sweet nectar to attract ants. As a short-lived plant that grows commonly in wastelands which are damp and on flood plains, it helps to colonize these areas and pave the way for regeneration of growth. Traditional medicinal uses: Leaves or sap are used to treat fungal infections such as ringworm. They contain a fungicide, chrysophanic acid. Because of its anti-fungal properties, it is a common ingredient in soaps, shampoos and lotions in the Philippines. Other chemicals contained in the plant includes saponin which acts as a laxative and expels intestinal parasites. In Africa, the boiled leaves are used to treat high-blood pressure. In South America, besides skin diseases, it is also used to treat a wide range of ailments from stomach problems, fever, asthma to snake bite and venereal diseases (syphilis, gonorrhoea).
