This is a colonial period Bell Jar Crystal Glass Hanging Lantern. There is no maker's name. This was mostly made for the Colonial Indian market, and other commonwealth countries. It was used in homes, club houses, places of worship, palaces etc. See last three images of bell jar lamps hanging during British India era times. The first one hangs near a doorway in a British era clubhouse., the 2nd is an engraving of a British era council hall during a meeting in 1870, see the bell jar lamps hanging from overhead, the 3rd shows the lamps hanging inside Tanjore Palace in 1900. The jar is hand blown thick crystal glass, it comes complete with its glass smoke cap, and brass fittings. The brass strap comes with three peacock head shaped hooks to hold the three steel chains of the glass smoke cap. The purpose of the smoke cap was to prevent blackening of the ceiling from the smoke emitted by the candle/ oil lamp that was placed inside the glass jar. The Bell Jar Lantern was originally designed for placing candles or oil lamps on the inside. This can be electrified like the newer retro style bell jar lamps found in stores, although it may lose a bit of its old-world charm. This old lamp shows some obvious signs of use, the glass jar and cap are without any cracks or chipping.
