Description: Category: Italian Modern and Contemporary Art - Abstract, Surrealist and Metaphysical Art of the Second Twentieth Century - Artistic Vanguards ARTIST: ELIO PELOSI (ARIANO IRPINO, 1933 - ?) Subject: Figures - Nude of a lying woman - Head of a man seen in profile - Abstract composition Mixed technique painting on cardboard Signed at lower right Elio Pelosi The painting was shown in the artist's solo exhibition in 1970 in Milan at the Agrifoglio Gallery. On the back of the frame are several brochures referring to it. On one of these clippings, the artist has written in pen the date (and time) of execution of the work: “Night of 17/11/1970.” The painting is presented in its original coeval metal frame with protective glass. The conservation condition is excellent, there are slight signs of time on the frame. Measurements of the painting: 19 1/2 inch (cm 49.5) width x 13 1/4 inch (cm 33.5) heightMeasurements of the frame: 26 1/4 inch (cm 66.5) width x 20 1/4 inch (cm 51.5) height This mixed technique painting on cardboard by Neapolitan artist Elio Pelosi, made in 1970, is a work characterized by intense color contrast and strong visual impact. The artist uses bold colors, mainly black, red, gray and green, to create a dramatic yet dreamlike atmosphere. The composition is dominated by two stylized figures: a male head, seen in profile, below, intensely outlined in black and white, and a nude female figure, lying and hovering above him in a seductive pose, also outlined in black and white but resting on a background of deep red. The lines are essential, dashed, with a skillful use of black and white that evokes the incisive strokes of woodcut or lithography. The monochromatic elements of the figures contrast sharply with the saturated-toned background, which varies between red, gray, black, and green. The style of the work is situated within the trends of the Neapolitan and Italian pictorial avant-garde of the 1970s, a movement in which Pelosi was a major figure. In this context, artists experimented with mixed techniques, combining painting and drawing, and often explored psychological and conceptual themes. Pelosi seems here to want to investigate the relationship between man and woman, depicting the male profile in a reflective pose while the female figure floats above him, almost like an image from his mind or an erotic fantasy. The contrasting colors and intensity of the figures might suggest a reflection on the tension between desire and introspection, between reality and imagination. On a conceptual level, the work could represent a reflection on intimacy and the relationship between the male and female worlds, or a deeper exploration of the mind and psyche. The female figure “floating” above the male head could symbolize an obsessive thought, desire, or memory. This type of composition invokes archetypal images of the unconscious, with the female figure seeming almost to emerge or overlap the male face as an inner projection. The red background may evoke passion, conflict, or vital energy. Particularly significant then is what the artist says in the brochure accompanying this work in the Milan exhibition, which appears here on the back of the frame: this painting was made on the “Night of November 17, 1970.” Expressive to the point of pain. Communicative to the point of obsession, emblematic in his language, very human and visionary at the same time: all this could be said of the Neapolitan painter Elio Pelosi. His characters are the painful revelation of his self. His is undoubtedly a story of emotionality. It is a vital account of feelings or, perhaps, the testimony of the diary of feelings. To this labyrinth of the oneiric he has incorporated new symbols, which Freud himself would call the sublimation of the unconscious: the horse, the snake, birds and birds of prey, sexual symbols, mythological figures, landscape, boxes. Dreams, we know, are the “Via Regia” to get to the unconscious. In fact, they constitute the root of psychoanalysis. Deciphering them becomes impossible. We can only interpret them. Pelosi reveals them as a kind of metamorphic vision, an alphabet of fragmentation, a palpitating reality of anxieties, desires, nightmares. Behind them there is always the inescapable sense of mystery. Elio Pelosi was a very prolific artist during the 1970s, exhibiting his works in several solo and group exhibitions. His painting crosses surrealism, metaphysics and abstract art, yet without embracing any canon, but finding a personal expression for his favorite themes. In this he should be associated with another artist, an exponent of the Neapolitan avant-garde in the 1970s, Antonio Bertè. Together with his brother Oscar, another leading name in this avant-garde strand, he founded The Cultural Association “il Pavone,” devoting himself to the organization of exhibitions, conferences and educational activities. Elio Pelosi's paintings are exhibited at galleries and auction houses always with high quotations.
