Felston DD740 Lip-Sync Corrector (audio delay for Dolby Digital or PCM)

Description: The DD740 is a four input digital audio switcher which provides remote controlled audio delay. It can switch and delay PCM or Dolby Digital up to 680 ms in 1 and 1/3 ms steps in its native mode and handles analog audio using optional A to D converters ($9.95 per input). It is designed to correct lip-sync but has many applications.Most suggestions for correcting lip-sync (or audio/video sync) don't work because they provide a "fixed" delay while lip-sync error constantly changes from source to source and even between programs on the same source. To correct lip-sync error you need a "variable delay" you can easily change in small increments (1 ms works well for most) when lip-sync error changes. The DD740 accomplishes this with a hand held remote allowing you to choose between 4 inputs and delay audio (even Dolby Digital) in 1 ms (or 1/3 ms in fine mode) increments while watching to get it perfect. If you need to handle both analog and digital audio the DD740 can accept analog audio using an A to D converter on any of its 4 inputs (we sell a great one for $9.95) and if you need analog output a special D to A converter on one of the DD740's 2 outputs that will down mix and convert Dolby Digital to analog stereo can be used. That way it can handle either analog or digital audio by just selecting the desired input and output without worrying about what input (analog or digital and if digital is it Dolby) goes to what output. Those special D to A converters are made by Cypress, Gefen and Orei (and possibly others) for $55 to $75. A regular less expensive D to A converter will 'work" but you have to be sure you don't ask the switcher to send a Dolby encoded input to a normal D to A converter output which can't handle it. It is much better not to have to worry about that! We are also offering a "bundle" which includes an A to D converter and one of the "special" D to A converters with a DD740 for $279 so if you need a switcher that can handle both analog and digital audio with the greatest flexibility look for it on eBay. The DD740 is guaranteed to solve your lip-sync problem or we will refund 100% upon return! "Try" the following to determine if an audio delay will solve your lip-sync problem but it may be too close to be sure so we will allow return of your DD740 for a full refund if it does not solve your lip-sync problem. When we first introduced our DD340 (and later DD540) we "knew" our audio delays "would" solve the lip-sync problem but today audio can arrive "already" delayed. When that happens there is NO product that will delay 4K or 8K video and correct lip-sync. But it "seldom" happens so we are making this offer to insure the DD740 will either work for you and solve your lip-sync problem or you can return it for a full refund (within 30 days so you will have plenty of time to be sure.) As mentioned there is no product on the market which can delay 4K or 8K video to correct lipsync if the audio arrives delayed. Normally the video arrives delayed allowing the audio to arrive ahead of the images and the DD740 can delay the audio to match correcting lipsync. Luckily it does not happen all the time and the DD740 can delay audio in increments as small as 1/3 ms to correct it perfectly in those cases. When lipsync is very close (within 10 ms) it is almost impossible to visually determine which direction it is off. If adding audio delay does not correct it you then know the audio was already delayed. It is best to leave the DD740 set on zero delay and when lipsync error is noticeable add delay in small steps until it is corrected. If lipsync gets worse instead of better go back to zero and try smaller increments. If using smaller increments doesn't correct it you have confirmed the audio arrived delayed and lipsync cannot be corrected by any product on the market. Digital Audio Lip-Sync Correction Felston lip-sync correction devices solve lip-sync error by allowing you to delay the digital audio signal to match the delay* in the video signal restoring perfect lip-sync. The DD740 is inserted in the digital audio path between your video source (STB, DVD, DVR, etc.) and your AV receiver (or sound bar) as in the diagram above. Since the DD740's "bit-perfect reproduction" does not change the digital audio signal, it is compatible with PCM and all present and future s/pdif surround sound formats such as Dolby and DTS at both 48 KHz and 96 KHz. Since there is nothing in the video or audio signal to define when they were ever in sync it is a subjective adjustment and this is where the remote control excels. It remembers the last delay setting used on each input and includes 36 presets where common delays can be stored for instant recall. But most importantly, the + and - buttons allow dynamic "on-the-fly" delay adjustments in 1 ms steps (1/3 in fine mode) while watching with no image disturbance - an essential feature allowing tweaking for "perfect-sync". These are necessary features for true lip-sync correction and not generally available on even the most expensive AV receivers that claim a lip-sync delay feature. * Normally lip-sync error is due to video delays in both the arriving signal as well as in the display allowing audio to arrive too soon but when broadcasters over-correct for the video delay the arriving signal might have audio delayed instead of video. At first thought it might appear the DD740 audio delay could not correct for "already delayed audio in the arriving signal" but in conjunction with the video delay of your LCD, DLP, or plasma display it actually can - up to the display's video delay. That is, if your display delays video 100 ms your DD740 will correct lip-sync errors from 100 ms audio lagging to 580 ms audio leading. That assumes your TV allows you to turn OFF any audio delay it adds. Samsung and Vizio allow setting audio delay to zero but Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc. usually don't so in those cases you should route digital audio directly from each source to your DD740 bypassing the TV. Video will still go to your TV via HDMI in that scenario. The DD740's output is optical and/or coax digital and therefore compatible with most AV receivers as well as "most" soundbars.
