Description: Maker: This beautiful tall candlestick has the blue underglaze mark of the Carl Thieme company, which produced exquisite porcelain works beginning with the founding of the Saxon Porcelain Manufactory in Potschappel, Germany, in 1872. The company is widely recognized as one of the great Dresden manufacturers. The company went into receivership in 1972 and re-emerged as the Saxonia Porcelain Manufactory Dresden. Mark and age: The blue back stamp on this candlestick - with the word "Dresden" below the Potschappel mark - came into use around 1901. Source: Dresden Porcelain Studios by Jim and Susan Harran. Design: The finely hand painted candleholder features colorful applied flowers and a beautifully executed cherub or putti. Similar designs were produced by many makers in Dresden and other regions of Germany. Size: The candlestick is 5 inches long, 4 inches wide at the base and 10 inches tall. The candle slot is uneven - it's about 1 5/8 inches wide. The candlestick weighs 1 pound 9 ounces. Condition: There are no cracks, repairs or crazing. It has light wear throughout, many chips and a missing piece of porcelain on the cherub's hand. Many of these flaws are shown in the photos with the red arrows but there may be more so please check all the photos very carefully - they are an essential part of the description. NOTE: This candlestick is one of a pair. We have the other one but it is badly damaged. Please contact us if you are interested in it.
