Lew Wallace (1827–1905) was a Union general and Governor of the New Mexico Territory who became better known as the author of the best-selling religio-historical novel Ben-Hur. FIRST EDITION OF BEN-HUR: A TALE OF THE CHRIST SIGNED TWICE BY LEW WALLACE First edition, later printing of Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (New York: Harper & Bros, 1880) signed twice on the front free endpaper and dedication page, “Your friend, Lew Wallace, 1897.” Accompanied with a handwritten note of provenance on the front free endpaper explaining how Wallace’s signature was acquired and later gifted: “From T.S. Clark, Crawfordsville Ind. U.S.A., Passenger on Board S.S. Peruvian Aug. 1897, To Captain Wm. Wallace.” Captain Wallace’s bookplate is on the front pastedown endpaper. The S.S. Peruvian was a trans-Atlantic passenger ship that took hundreds of trips from England to Quebec City or Portland, Maine from 1864 to 1905. ACCOMPANIED WITH A HANDWRITTEN NOTE OF PROVENANCE EXPLAINING HOW WALLACE’S SIGNATURE WAS ACQUIRED ON A TRANS-ATLANTIC SHIP Decorated dark blue cloth boards, gilted spine and front board, measures 7 by 5 inches, 560 pages, and in good condition with rubbing to the boards (primarily on the edges and spine), the front and rear pastedown and free endpapers split and exposing the mull, and a stain to the top border on the first few pages.
