"The Iliad," set during the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states, tells of the battles and events during the quarrel between King Agamemnon, leader of the Greek armies and the warrior Achilles, son of the goddess Thetis and the mortal king, Peleus, in the Greek's efforts to get back Helen, the beautiful wife of Menelaus and sister-in-law of Agamemnon. "The Iliad" describes the Greek sieges; the earlier events that caused the ten-year war, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns tend to appear near the beginning. Then the epic narrative takes up events prophesied for the future, such as Achilles' looming death and the sack of Troy, although the narrative ends before these events take place. The "Odyssey" focuses on the ten years that it takes Greek hero Odysseus to reach Ithaca. In his 20-year absence, it is assumed he has died, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must deal with a group of unruly suitors. Odysseus endures many hardships on his return: the Lotus Eaters, the one-eyed Cyclops, who traps Odysseus and his men in his cave; the sorceress, CIRCE, who turns Odysseus' men into pigs; the seven-year stay with Calypso, the goddess who keeps him as her husband, sharing her bed and her lifestyle; the one-year stay with King Alcinous, who would like for him to marry his daughter and remain with them; his voyage to the underworld of Hades; but half of his adventures occurs when he finally returns home and drives out the suitors, killing the disloyal men and the unfaithful female servants. The "Odyssey" ends happily with a king returning home to his kingdom, a father reunited his son, and a man reunited with his faithful, loving wife.
