Description: I was the author of this book, Treasures of the Confederate Coast: The real Rhett Butler and Other Revelations. This copy was printed in 1996, but, since it is from a just opened box of the books that I had in storage, it is still in brand new condition. It is from the second printing of the first edition, both of which were done as paperback (soft cover). If you aren't familiar with my work you can read about me on Wikipedia. Better yet, go to shipwrecks.com/about-spence on my website. I am probably best known for the numerous Civil War era shipwrecks that I have discovered, two of which, i.e. the submarine H.L. Hunley, and the blockade runner Georgiana, are covered in individual chapters in this book. Unlike many of the used copies of the 1st and 2nd printings of this book being sold by others, your copy will not be inscribed to someone you do not know and who you will never meet. Before I send it, I will not only sign the copy that you purchase, I can personalize it to you or to someone to whom you are giving it, as long as you message me through eBay before you buy it or within an hour or two after you pay for it. If and when you do message me, please include the general wording that you want. For various reasons, I do reserve the right to edit or shorten the wording to my standards or for length. Although hundreds of copies of this book were rebound in hardcover for gifts and for sales to libraries, I no longer have any for sale, and they can be both hard to find and extremely expensive. Copies from the first-printing, which was done in 1995 (also in paperback), are rarer than those from the first printing and have a different cover. I will also be selling signed copies of them for $24.95 (see separate listing), and I am offering personalization for them. This book, which is over 500 pages long, starts off with a lengthy, but interesting, introduction, followed by these chapters:"The real Rhett Butler" (George Trenholm)"The First Successful Submarine" (the H.L. Hunley)"The Mystery ship of the Confederacy" (S.S. Georgiana)"The War and the Blockade" (Who, What, When, Where, and Why)The book is illustrated with over 100 black & white images, many being photos of artifacts found on some of shipwrecks recorded in this book. Starting on page 115 is Spence's List™ which in this case deals with shipwrecks of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, that were lost during the Civil War era (1861-1865). The list consists of several-hundred encyclopedic type entries telling about each vessel, when and where it was lost, and, if known — where it was built, the type of cargo it carried, cause of the loss, and other details, complete with source references, which serious researchers will find useful. This list is the largest part of this book and most of the wrecks in the list have yet to be found in modern times, so their locations are given only as they were reported at the time of their loss. The treasures they carried were rarely silver and gold, but were often like those that I found on the wreck of the Georgiana, which carried munitions, medicines and merchandise, which had been purchased in England at a cost of over a million dollars. By the time I started salvaging the Georgiana in 1960s, those items were antiques and had become true treasures. Starting on page 403 of this book, is a series of appendices. If you check the fourth image for this item's sale, you will see a table of contents page and you will find that the appendices are listed there by title. The price is $19.95, which is the same as it was in 1996. I will send it to you via Media Mail for a flat fee of $7.50. I am not yet set up to ship internationally. You might also want to purchase a "Gone With The Wind related Civil War shipwreck artifact on notarized-certificate" that I currently have on sale. The certificate’s official list-price is $129, but I have it on sale for Christmas for just $89 and, for the time being, I am still willing to accept what I think are reasonable offers. I reserve the right to change the price, and will probably do so as I run out of certificates, so don't wait too long.
