Description: Hagia Sophia: A History of Constantinople Lord Kinross HCDJ Deluxe Edition - 5th Printing 1979 The story of Hagia Sophia. This books just touches briefly on the more salacious moments and instead focuses on Byzantine mosaics. The Emperor Justinian (ruled 518 A.D. to 527 A.D.) married Theodora- "A theatrical prostitute brought up in the world of the circus and skilled in the art of pantomime. She was the emperors concubine, and then, through a change in the law, his wife." "Before her death, she was elevated to the rank of co-sovereign ...and adored as queen." Procopious wrote that "it was impossible for mere men to describe her comeliness in words or imitate it in art." She shared her husbands ruthless ambition and her influence over him was considered highly beneficial. She also did a lot for women's rights, especially prostitutes. The other good story line:In 1195 A.D. Emperor Isaac was blinded by his evil brother, Alexius III, and then dethroned. Isaac's son, Alexius IV, fled into exile. In 1203, the Normans invade, Alexius III puts his blind brother back on the throne and Isaac's son is installed as co-emperor. Soon after, Isaac's son, Alexius IV is thrown in a dungeon and strangled by his son-in-law, who is nick-named Mourtzuphlos, or "unibrow", because of his bushy eyebrows. Meanwhile, Isaac dies of grief and fright. In 1204, Mourtzuphlos (now Alexius V) is flung to his death from the top of the Theodosian Column. Condition: Very good vintage preowned condition.
