Description: WOMEN AT THE FOUNTAIN Artist: LUDWIG PASSINI A HIGH QUALITY PHOTOGRAVURE PRINTED IN THE 1880'S!! PERFECT FOR FRAMING AS AN ART PRINT FOR YOUR DEN !! VERY ANTIQUE & OLD WORLD LOOKING. ITEM(s) OVER 110 YEARS OLD!! This is a scene in one of the many small open squares in that wonderful "City by the Sea," in which there are no streets and no horses or wagons. The stranger who attempts to thread his way on foot through Venice will soon be made sensible of the difficulty of his undertaking. In the endeavor to go forward towards a given point, he suddenly finds himself confronted by a blank wall or by a canal. He must consequently go either to the right or to the left in search of another alley, or of a bridge. This difficulty is no sooner surmounted than a similar one presents itself, and after an hour's constant walking he may have made very little forward progress: moreover, as the houses are auite close together, there is no chance of carrying any landmark in the eye for guidance, and unless the traveller has a very clear head there is danger that after having turned on his course a dozen times or so, he will be utterly confused as to the points of the compass, and will wander he knows not whither. But in his extremity, he can always resort to the gondoliers, who will speed him swiftly through the watery lanes to any point he may designate. But if the pedestrian have an eye for the picturesque, he will find many compensations for the difficulties he encounters. These compensations often come in the form of pleasant surprises at unexpected openings like that in our picture. Sometimes these little piazzas are surrounded by striking buildings (including very often a church); sometimes they are ornamented with a statue; sometimes they are occupied by vegetable and fruit markets, and not seldom they contain a well or a fountain similar to that presented in the scene before us. This well is a picture of itself. Simple, massive, yet thoroughly artistic in line and proportion, it is not unlike a huge capital that might have belonged to a column in some ancient temple reared by giants. It is probably yeryold, and is capable of enduring for centuries yet to come. These wells are the common resorts of the women of the neighborhood. Here daily, at certain hours, they are sure to meet, and as sure to exchange the gossip of the day. Ludwig Passini was born at Vienna, 1832. After studying at the Vienna Academy under Karl Werner, he sojourned for a considerable time in Venice and in Rome; and he has since repeatedly visited those cities, together with other parts of Italy. His Italian studies have given direction to his artistic activity, and his fame rests largely on the fidelity and spirit with which he represents Italian architecture and popular life, especially as seen in Venice and Rome. He is a member of the Academies of Berlin, Vienna and Venice; has received medals at Berlin, Paris and Vienna, and is Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
