Original Narrative: BAPTISMAL FONT AT THE CATHEDRAL OF PALERMO: THE principal Baptistery in the Chiesa Madre, or Cathedral, at Palermo, occupies one of the small lateral chapels. The entrance is between noble columns of Oriental granite, which sustain and beautify the nave, and the flooring between them ia of various-coloured marbles. A flight of marble steps on either side leads to the upper platform of the sacellum, where the ceremony of baptism ia performed, and the central space is filled by a magnificent font, the design of Gagini, and of white marble. From an octagonal panelled torus rises a pedestal, representing the stem of a tree, at the foot of which are Adam and Eve in reclining attitudes. The serpent looks down upon them from the foliage that spreads out from the trunk, and which receives upon its expanded leaves the beautifully sculptured basin. The sidea of the fout are adorned with basso-relievos, by Villareale—scriptural subjects, exquisitely sculptured, and relating to the solemn service of the church, which is celebrated here. The cover presents an accomplished specimen of the genius of the artist, being rich beyond description in variety of tracery and ornament, and terminating in a halo encircling a lamb. Every part of the Baptistery is adorned with appropriate emblems. The walls are decorated with Corinthian columns, rich friezes, and pediments, and the intercolumnar spaces filled with paintings of conspicuous merit. The principal, which is by Morealese, represents the baptism of our Saviour by St. John. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
