Basquiat). Julian Schnabel: Sculpture contains a 22-page booklet featuring 19 full-color plates of Mr. Schnabel's sculptures, as well as full-color front and rear covers (also photos of Mr. Schnabel's sculptures). Along with the booklet, a DVD is included containing Footage of an Installation by Bruno Buschofberger Gallery which was filmed and edited by Brian Kelly. The film visually details an installation of Mr. Schnabel's sculptures on a plateau near St. Moritz, Switzerland in the Winter of 1991. The sculptures remained on the plateau for several months. The booklet and DVD are housed in a very sturdy case, fronted by a color photo of another of Mr. Schnabel's sculptures. The publication of Julian Schnabel: Sculpture coincided with the opening of an exhibition of these same sculptures at: 545 West 22nd Street; New York, NY (Robert Mnuchin, Chairman) in September/October 2004 (see review below). The case is in FINE- condition, having a very small bump to the bottom inside corner of the rear cover. The booklet is also in FINE- condition having a small amount of very light wear to the bottom (inside) corner. The DVD plays perfectly and is in FINE condition. Case, booklet, and DVD present very much as new. A handsome copy of a unique and extremely interesting item from one of the art world's major figures, Julian Schnabel, and C&M Arts. PLEASE NOTE: I use the following terms to describe book conditions ... AS NEW: The book is in the same immaculate condition as when it was published. This could be the description for a book that has been lost in a warehouse for years, never shelved, thumbed or even opened yet may still be some years old.FINE (F or FN): A Fine book approaches the condition of As New, but without being crisp. The book may have been opened and read, but there are no defects to the book, jacket or pages. NEAR FINE (NF): May have 1 or 2 very minor defects. VERY GOOD (VG): Used condition, same as above only it may have two or three more minor defects such as small tears, scratches, small stains to covers, or minor tears and creases to inside pages. Thank you for your interest and Good Luck! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE NEW YORK TIMESART IN REVIEW: Julian Schnabel By Ken Johnson Oct. 22, 2004 C&M Arts 545 West 22nd Street, Chelsea Through Oct. 30 Installed in the Dia Art Foundation's cavernous, barrel-vaulted gallery on the north side of West 22nd Street, a selection of big and bigger sculptures from the late 1980's and 1990 by Julian Schnabel creates a rousing theatrical ambience. Though massively physical, the sculptures of darkly patinaed bronze and aged wood seem as much like props for a portentous modern performance as artworks to be studied for their inherent qualities of form and imagery. At the center stands a 17-foot-tall cruciform structure of old pieces of wood cast in bronze. The word "Idiota" is painted in white block letters across the top piece to vaguely blasphemous effect. All the other works seem animated by a kind of medieval religiosity, too, as though they had been exhumed from an ancient, long forgotten schismatic church. "Esso-Es," which consists of found objects, like a sculpture of a dog, antlers and a precariously balanced stack of tables, inclines toward Surrealism, while others, resembling rudimentary totem poles, veer toward primitivism. Some are comical: "Si Tacuisses" is a bronze cast of the big stump of a palm tree with a ragged sign awkwardly attached that reads like a comic-strip speech bubble, "I went to Tangiers and had dinner with Paul Bowles." Mr. Schnabel's sculpture may be bombastic, but it is also playful in its own ponderous way, and though it seems raw on the surface it is, as his paintings usually are, unfailingly tasteful and pleasing to look at. -- KEN JOHNSON
