Long 1800s Antique Cobalt Blue Glass Beads Rosary-St Silver/St Louis de Gonzague

Description: Circa late 1800's, this rare Art Nouveau French large rosary is made of cobalt blue glass beads and all metal parts are made generally in sterling silver. It is also one of my favorite in the collection. This antique rosary is hallmarked and is composed of medals with a devotion to the Blessed Mary and to Saint Louie de Gonzague, sometimes called Saint Aloysius de Gonzague. Saint Louis was an Italian aristocrat, born in 1568, and died in 1591 only at a very young age of 23 after taking care of plague victims. This rare rosary has big faceted cobalt blue beads which will dazzle anyone particularly when light strikes the beads. It is also an antique item that is in very good antique condition but some parts shows signs of use and age. Overall, its few imperfections are part of the story of this beautiful rosary. You might find that the crucifix is a little smaller in scale compared to the size of this rosary, however some antique rosaries have this particular trait. Many pictures are included in this listing for you to appreciate this rare item not only for its beauty but also for its high quality. Please study the details of this antique rosary: Crucifix: is made of sterling silver and in the Art nouveau style. It is a puffed rosary, meaning there are two sides of embossed cross frames that were soldered together to form a hollow tubular-like cross. The ends of the cross are decorated with shell-like image. The reverse side is the same. Both sides have curvy vines climbing from bottom to the top of the cross. Being hollow, the cross has a small 'split' near the bail and below the vertical line of the cross. This patina does not affect the working condition of the cross or rosary. There is a little dent on the intersection of the cross frame at reverse side. One of the 'ball' at the cross ends is a little bit down. This rosary is perhaps approximately 120 years old.....so overall, it has been taken cared of properly. There is a small amount of glue on the neck of the bail by previous owner/s where the (where the hallmark would have been at one time). The corpus is a separate part that would have been soldered on the frame. The cross is stable and given proper care it should last for more many years. Tip: many antique sterling silver cross are hollow and are thus prone to bumps and dents or accidents. After prayers, please put your cross on top of the beads so as not to crush the hollow crucifix. Personally, I wrap them with a small sheet of bubble wrap tied with a sticky tape. Remember, it is irreplaceable! Even with the missing hallmark, I am pretty sure that this crucifix would be 800/1000 silver just like the other parts. Size: 37mm x 27mm Beads: are a group of rare dazzling antique round faceted cobalt blue glass beads. As I write this listing, the blue colour reflects on the paper where it is lying. The more the beads reflects when light strikes them. They are also big beads at 11mm in size!. The Ave beads are all plain round beads. All Pater beads are protected by sterling silver florette cappings. All cappings on this rosary are complete and original. This is another plus on this antique item as some cappings in antique rosaries are missing. Size: 11mm Links: Most links are made of sterling silver. The maker of this rosary used different metal chains to support the weight of the beads. In between the beads is a different type of chain chosen to hold the weight of the rosary. The longer chains are all made of sterling silver links that are soldered for strength. Again, the sterling silver chains would be 800/1000 silver in content as in most antique rosaries. Center medal: is a heart-shaped medal with the entertwined Art Nouveau monograms of AM (Ave Maria). Both sides show the same design. One side shows the French Boar hallmark (800/1000 silver). Medal: Attached to this antique rosary is an sterling silver antique medal devoted to Saint Louis de Gonzague (in French). The reverse side shows the Guardian Angel protecting a child. It is marked: 'O S. GARDIEN ANGE SOYEZ MON GUIDE' (O, Saint Guardian Angel Be My Guide). This medal however bears marks of 'accidents' sometime during its time. It is hallmarked with a Crab hallmark (800/1000 silver) above the Guardian Angel's head. This medal is intact and is stable to last many, many years. Size: 23mm x 20mm St Aloysius was born in Castiglione delle Stevierre in the Duchy of Mantua, which was a duchy in Lombardy, northern Italy, then a subject of the Holy Roman Empire. Gonzaga (in Italian) was the eldest of 7 children and was heir to the his father's title and status of Marquis. Even at a young age Aloysius developed a calling for the religious life after reading a book about Jesuit missionaries in India. In July 1585, just soon after turning 17, Aloysius gave up all his rights of inheritance which was accepted by the Emperor. When he went to Rome, he was given a special audience to Pope Sixtus V because of his noble birth. In 1585, he bacame a novitiate to the Society of Jesus in Rome. Two years after in 1587, he took the religious 'vows of chastity, poverty and obedience'. It was in 1591 that plague broke out in Rome. The Jesuits had hospitals caring for the sick people infected with plague. St Aloysius who himself had poor health cared for these sick people. It wasn't long that he himself caught the infectious disease and died at the age of 23. He was buried at the church of St Ignatius of Loyola in Rome. He was beatified only 14 years after his death. In 1729, Pope Benedict declared Saint Aloysius to be the patron saint of young student, of Christian youth, of plague victims and also of AIDS sufferers and their carers. It is a time to reflect in current times, when disease has caused sufferings and tragedies to many people. St Aloysius time was a time when cause and cure for plague is unknown. It is then true that history repeats itself in very similar manner. It is also a time to reflect on the 'true' important things in life. This reflection is not only for those who suffered and died but a time to appreciate those who face the courage and gave sacrifice to help and assist those who are sick. We can also appreciate the help of modern medicine that help us cure or find cure for diseases but most of all, we can be reminded that we can only pray and ask for help from above.
