Description: Rapid City/Richard “Dick” V. Walker was born January 7, 1925 in Stage Barn Canyon, SD to Ralph and Gladys Walker. He died peacefully in his sleep on November 18, 2016. Dick grew up in Deadwood taking care of his younger brother, Bill Walker and working at Beshara’s Grocery. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, Dick joined the US Navy and spent four years in the South Pacific on a battleship. Upon his return in 1946, he married his first and only love, Rose Ann Beshara. They moved to Rapid City and had two children, Sandra Rose and Richard “Rick” Walker. In 1947, Dick was one of the first World War ll U.S Navy veterans to join the South Dakota National Guard after the war. He worked with the Guard. He quickly moved up through the ranks from Corporal, to Master Sargent and finally to Chief Warrant Officer until his retirement in 1984. He held many positions but is remembered for his 1951 creation of the “Coyote Patch” sleeve insignia and the construction of the “Coyote Den” in 1970 at Camp Rapid. Dick and his wife Rosie managed the Coyote Den for 17 years. This lot of World War Two medals belong to him there is the campaign mental with a silver star and four campaigns that he was in his World War Two victory medal service American campaign 30 years in the Coast Guard. His father's World War One victory medal leader of the Beast Coyote Pin which is referenced in the obituary. Service of Systems Coast Guard 30-year pins. National Guard pins and of course USBC Bowling Hall of Fame pin along with the carbine and pistol pins. As well along one of his dog tags that says Richard Vern Walker 648-6705 USNRA.
