Description: Madagascar Africa French Portuguese colonies 1885 Bayle scarce detailed old map Carte de L'Ile de Madagascar Par Henri Mager. (Africa, East Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa). Issued Paris, c.1885-90 by Bayle. Engraved by A. Simon. Detailed and very uncommon late 19th century color lithographed map, focusing on this former French colony. The key and distance scale lower right notes political boundaries as a result of the Treaty of Berlin. Little known river sources speculatively shown. Seven tiny insets top right, coastline and interior of African east coast shown along left side. Minor light toning and small scattered age spotting as typical for maps of this vintage, but to our eyes and for most people, an entirely acceptable and nice looking example of this antique map. Original fold line as issued. Sheet measures c. 19 1/2" x 12 3/4". Printed area measures c. 16 1/4" x 11". Small oblong folio format. Gravier, La Cartographie de Madagascar, p. 421. (but this map apparently not mentioned). Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, vol. 4, p. 163. [R21648]
