Description: Original 1884 antique color lithographed double-page map of Texas, printed more than 140 years ago. This map has a handsome, decorative border, counties are outlined in color, and topography is drawn in relief. There's scant settlement west of the 100th meridian of longitude, with some labeled counties not having a single town or sign of settlement. The shows Greer County, which had been created by the Texas legislature in 1860, as part of Texas. A dispute over who Greer County actually belonged was not resolved until 1896 when the Supreme Court ruled that the area was not part of Texas and Congress passed a bill to make it part of Oklahoma Territory. The town of Ben Ficklin is identified on the map as the seat of Tom Green County. Ben Ficklin was destroyed in a catastrophic flood in 1882 and today is one of the hundreds of ghost towns in Texas. A large Pecos County stretches all the way from the Rio Grande to the New Mexico border. Among the other named places and features on the map are Fort McIntosh, King Ranch, the Emigrant Crossing on the Pecos River, the New York, Texas & Mexican Railroad, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Fort Stockton, Camp Lancaster, Midland, Marfa, the Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railroad, Dallas, Matagorda, Houston, Buffalo Gap, El Paso, Old Fort Terret, Bryan, Hardin, the Texas Pacific Railroad, Sabine Pass, Comanche Spring, Camp Hudson, Horsehead Hills, Eagle Pass, Fort Duncan, Dockum's Ranch, and Mustang Water Holes. The image area measures 30.5 x 43.3 cm [12" x 17"], and longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with a vertical center fold, as issued, no marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, published by George F. Cram in 1884, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine.
