Description: I've been collecting rare paper since the 1970s, and this is part of a large collection I've accumulated over the last 40 years. This particular letter I purchased circa 2008 from a well-known art and letter conservator in Marshall's Creek Pennsylvania. Not wanting to appear overly preferential in the assignment of overseas political offices, Zachary Taylor asks Millard Fillmore to assist him in finding a position for Lewison Fairchild, son of John F. Fairchild - both men involved in regional politics and also attendees of the Philadelphia Convention. Besides making an error on the date at the top of the main page, while writing on the back page - Aide-de-camp W.S. Bliss smudges the second paragraph and stops his dictation - making a note in pencil to re-copy it. SO, we have an unfinished letter, first draft, dictated by the President of the United States to the Vice President of the United States from 1849. Taylor would pass away the very next year, at which point Fillmore would take office as the POTUS. Fillmore would also be the last of the WHIG party to do so. Dictated by Zachary Taylor to W.S. Bliss, Taylor's Aide-de-camp (and son-in-law) this draft letter is the only example of this particular correspondence - the finished letter has never resurfaced. Winner of this auction will receive a letter of provenance for their records of the acquisition history of the letter, as well as copies of the academic identification of the handwriting belonging to Bliss. Condition report: Wear as expected for a 175-year-old document. All-in-all, nice condition and well preserved.
