Description: Superb, large, handwoven, coiled basketry effigy Figure of a Woman. This coiled, woven basketry effigy was skillfully handmade by a O'odham/Papago artist basketmaker. She wove the hollow figure from yucca and grasses, much like a traditional basket, adding in dark design elements for the garment and a ribbon tie. She also added facial features, including eyes, and a nose and mouth. The arms are woven over heavy wire (a good, sturdy substrate that has held up very well.) The figure appears to be a woman with a stylish short haircut (such as that of potter Maria Martinez, see the last photo for an example). This basketry figure has a quiet, elegant, composed quality, and a lot of presence. Condition: This figural effigy basket is in excellent condition with good color, and no discernible stains or damage of any kind. Size: This is a large figure, standing almost 14" high (13 7/8") and 5" in diameter at the base. This is a fine artwork, a lovely piece of basketry, and a strong sculpture. It also has some nice age, probably from the 1940's. It will be packed very well and shipped USPS Priority.
