Bedford A near fine first printing in an original first issue jacket Publisher and Year: New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1911.-Edition: First edition, first printing ("October, 1911" on the copyright page). Original first issue dust jacket (gold/gray with $1.50 on front panel). There is a green/white variant of the jacket also priced at $1.50, but the priority between the two variants, if any, remains undetermined. Later issues of the jacket are also green/white, but have a price of $2.50 or none at all. Published simultaneously with the first British edition (London: Hodder & Stoughton) in an identical design, which also came with gray and white variants. Bibliographic Reference: Cutler (1931).-Condition and Description: A truly spectacular copy. Olive cloth pictorially stamped and titled in gilt, which remains radiant. All thirteen plates on glossy paper with illustrations by F.D. Bedford present and bright. Tight hinges and binding. Sharp corners. Previous owner's name on front flyleaf in pencil (F.S. Hall, curator at the University of Washington Burke Museum in the 1910s-1920s) and erased pencil on second flyleaf; else entirely free and clear. Pages clean with no foxing. The original jacket is likewise excellent, with the gold remaining bright and minimal wear at the extremities. The jacket has been lightly strengthened on the verso (underside) along the spine seam and crown, else untouched. Undoubtedly among the finest copies.
