Description: This is a photo of Al Smith, a candidate for President riding on an ass in front of City Hall in Bellingham, WashingtonAl Smith was Governor of New York for many years, and prior to that served in the New York legislature and as sheriff. He attempted to run for President in 1924 and ran as the Democrat's nominee in 1928 but lost in a landslide to Herbert Hoover. He was the first Catholic presidential candidate for president for a major party. Every year since 1946 the "Albert E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner" is held to raise money for vulnerable women and children. "Today the dinner is a cultural landmark, a living memorial to one of New York's most beloved sons, remembered as the first Roman Catholic presidential candidate for a major party and a four-term governor who catalyzed labor reform and social security legislation in America." In this photo, likely taken during his campaign for President, he is riding a donkey with a sign that says "The Happy Warrior and the Proverbial Ass".This is a 5" x 7" black and white photo. It was copied off the original glass plate of photographer James Sandison. The photo shows in the upper left that there was some damage to the glass plate this was copied from, but otherwise it's in very good condition - Please see photos Please note: I do have and/or will have a number of other historical photos of the Bellingham, WA area for sale.
