Trying to match the legacy of his uncle, Justinian I, Justin suspended tributes to the Empire's belligerent neighbors. This ultimately backfired and resulted in renewed war with the Persians and a Lombard invasion of Italy. At the end of his reign, Justin II would suffer a mental breakdown and power would de facto be transferred to his wife Sofia and his adopted son, the general Tiberius II.
