SATSUMA JAPANESE POTTERY PRESENTATION PLATE CHARGER DETAILED LANDSCAPE VINTAGE

Description: Satsuma Japanese Pottery Presentation Plate Charger Detailed Landscape Vintage Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Satsuma platter, plate, or charger. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This piece has detailed landscape decoration which includes mountains, trees, homes, and a river. There is gold-painted decoration in addition to the other colors. The diameter of the plate is approximately 12 1/4 inches, and it stands about 1 1/2 inches tall. There are three factory-made holes on the back for hanging the plate on a wall. There is a piece of string threaded through the holes, and the strength of the string has not been tested. Unpacked, this item weighs 2 pounds 14.7 ounces. This would be a wonderful addition to a collection of Asian decorative arts. Identification This Satsuma plate is vintage, and the exact age is not known. It is marked on the back, as shown. It was a presentation piece for a Lieutenant Colonel Robert L. Rhea of the United States Army. The plate was presented by Japan Iron and Steel Co. on an unknown date. The presentation information is printed in gold. The reason for the presentation is not known. My brief online research indicated that Lieutenant Colonel Rhea was in the 7th Armored Division. Per the Hall of Valor project, he was awarded a Silver Star "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 7th Armored Division, in action in Holland, on 28 October 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Rhea's gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army." Condition The plate looks very good overall, as shown, with no chips or cracks. It has fine crazing. There is some wear to the gold decoration on the rim, with very light finish wear elsewhere. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1. Payments Taxes may be applicable.
