Text in Japanese, with an introduction and list of illustrations in English. Mingei Series Volume 2. "Oka Echizen no kami (a supreme court judge) in Kyoho 4 (1719) established the symbols of firemen of his time. The firemen gathered together and risked their lives under the matoi standard. The carrier of matoi is a hereditary position generally, and the most honorable job among firemen. The matoi carrier climbed to the top of the roof ridge of a house close to where the fire was, and held up the standard and urged that the fire be extinguished. The firemen's motto was: duty, sympathy, endurance. Therefore, among Japanese crests there is no other form more vigorous than matoi. The standard identified the particular group to the public, so it was essential that each have a unique design to distinguish it from others. There resulted simple and strong three-dimensional effects, which are rare anywhere in the world." (Taken from introduction). When referring to this item please quote stockid 213105.
