FOREWORD It is my great pleasure to witness the debut of a book dealing with the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu. More than five hundred years have elapsed since Iizasa Choisai Ienao founded the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, a forerunner of the classical Japanese martial arts. In the course of its history this martial tradition made possible the existence of many other traditions and the development of a number of expert swordsmen. In the days when the warrior government ruled Japan the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu was highly valued for its technical excellence and cultural quality. It provided a mandatory training course for warriors of those times. After World War II, however, the time-honored martial arts waned. Now the doors to the classical martial arts are available to the public and swordsmanship is being carried on. It seems to me, however, that swordsmanship nowadays lacks in substance. A similar deficiency is noted in the spirit with which to orient swordsmanship in the right direction. Never before has there been a greater need to hand down to posterity the classical martial arts as a cultural asset of the Japanese people. I strongly wish that the classical martial arts will make a spiritual contribution of their own in one way or another to the modern world which is dominated by material considerations. I am convinced that this book will play an effective role as a medium by which to communicate to later generations the true spirit of the classical martial arts and their value as a cultural asset. It is my hope that master-teacher Otake will keep pursuing and devoting himself to his studies for the growth of the classical martial arts. In closing I wish to express my appreciation for the cooperation of those persons who have made possible the publication of this book.
