SWEENY - DOCUMENT SIGNED 10/03/1868 - HFSID 295424 THOMAS W. SWEENEY "Fighting Tom", a veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars and of the Fenian invasion of Canada, signs a 31x10 muster role. Document signed: "T. W. Sweeny/Inspector and Mustering Officer", 2 pages, 31x20½. Columbus, Georgia, 1868 October 31. Muster role of the 16th US Infantry Regiment, signed on page 2. Thomas W. "Fighting Tom" Sweeny (1820-1892), born in Cork, Ireland, came to the US with his family in 1833. As a young lieutenant in the Mexican War, Sweeney fought in General Scott's advance to Mexico City, wounded at Cerro Gordo and losing an arm at Churubusco. He participated in several battles on the Western frontier, including the Yuma War (1850-1853). He served the Union during the Civil War, wounded twice more during fighting at Fort Donelson and at Shiloh, and in the Atlanta campaign, and rising to command of a brigade. He was court martialed after Atlanta for getting in a fistfight with his corps commander, but was cleared of charges. In 1866, he led one of the raids of the Fenian Brotherhood on Canada. (The Fenians sought by attacking Canada to compel Britain to grant independence to Ireland.) Sweeney was present at the Battle of Ridgeway, a Fenian victory. Arrested by the US for violating neutrality laws, he was - remarkably - released and restored to active command. (The US government, resentful of British aid to the Confederacy during the Civil War, was initially lax in suppressing the Fenians.) Sweeney took command of the 16th Infantry, a crack veteran unit from the Civil War, retiring as a brigadier general in 1870. CONDITON?
