Description: Tiehua Wuhu Anhui Iron Painting Folk Art China Picture Metal Chrysanthemum 8 1/2 This is a vintage "tiehua" (translates to iron flower or iron painting) which is a traditional Chinese art form that originated in the 1600's by artist Tang Peng in Wuhu, Anhui, China. Wuhu is the city in province of Anhui. Sometimes these iron paintings are simply called, "Wuhu Anhui". This art form is traditionally crafted in wrought iron. The delicate constructions look like a brush painting. The art form nearly went extinct in 20th century but has been revived by modern craftsmen. Traditional subjects of the past were of flowers, birds, and Chinese scenes. The inventor, Tang Peng is said to have drawn inspiration from the Chinese paintings and paper cut work of his time. He used iron instead of ink and hammer instead of brush. This is a complicated piece with a lot of individual solder joints and the cutting is delicate. Note the intricate leaves and many petaled flowers. This must not be easy to fabricate in metal with hammers and other metalsmithing tools. This picture measures 8 1/2" x 4". The picture is of blooming chrysanthemum flowers. The metal is painted black, as is the tradition. As this is an older pre-owned vintage item, there is some paint loss here and there. The item could also be displayed in window with small hook or framed with background of your choice. This is a delicate lightweight picture just a few millimeters thick....almost like a paper cut picture. I am assuming this is iron metal but it could be another metal. I am not sure if the tradition continued in only iron metal and I don't know the age. I can tell it is hand fabricated and the back side shows the many solder joints. See my photo of the backside. My photos are of the actual item you are getting. See our store for other interesting tiehua items.
