Description: JACK SHELDON QUINTET: Hollywood Heroes. Used LP in Very Good+/Very Good+ condition; Concord Jazz Catalog # CJ-339; 1988 Condition: Vinyl has some patches of discoloration, not affecting sound; packaging has ever so slight shelf wear along top of record jacket (stored on shelves with low overhead) and a minor “crinkle” at bottom left of front of jacket. I have replaced original Concord inner sleeve with a generic soft poly one (original had some “stickum” from an adhesive label I’d applied with a note to myself). Behind the Music: If you can turn around and sell this album for a tidy sum, then “You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din”! You want to buy this because Jack Sheldon (fairly recently deceased) had a remarkable personality. I fell in love with this album when the radio station from which I was broadcasting Jazz in the 1980s received a promo copy. The version here of “I Thought About You,” with lyrics by the incomparable Johnny Mercer, runs over eight minutes and is “to die for.” Given the timetable of my own life and activities, I did not then know of the existence of a TV show called “Schoolhouse Rock.” It turns out Jack did a lot of voice work for that program over the years. He was far more than “just” a fine trumpet player. His sense of humor emerged exuberantly on a 1960 album called Out!, featuring his original tune “Atomic Bomb” (!). In that Age of Nuclear Anxiety—which of course never really ended—Sheldon managed to make a side-splittingly funny comment on the situation. That album is hopelessly out of print, probably forever. But you needn’t be disappointed by the selections on this album from nearly 30 years later: The Joint is Jumpin’, Pardon My Southern Accent, Poor Butterfly, Lover, Rosetta, I Thought About You, I Want to Be Happy. PERSONNEL: Sheldon—trumpet, vocals; Ray Sherman—piano; Doug MacDonald—guitar; Dave Stone—bass; Gene Estes—drums. Jack Sheldon is subject of a documentary film called Trying to Get Good, which delves into his struggle to attain and maintain sobriety. About the seller: I am downsizing my personal belongings, and you can benefit. Unless otherwise indicated, all my records have been owned by me alone and treated with loving care. No scratches or gouges. I have been a Jazz radio broadcaster for 30+ years, but my musical tastes are wide-ranging. You will see this as my listed offerings grow.
