Description: VINTAGE 1970 TYPEWRITER OLYMPIA SM9 SERVICED NEW RIBBON EXCELLENT Never buy a vintage typewriter unless you know the condition, it is difficult and comparatively expensive to get typewriters serviced or repaired. Serial number 4435713 which identifies it as a machine built in 1970, in West Germany. The OLYMPIA SM range of typewriters are famous and greatly respected, certainly one of the very best serious professional portables. The basic machine was designed to be very robust, full functions, and capable of heavy use by a professional typist, they started in 1949 and continued with gradual changes until the SM 9 of 1969 which stayed pretty well unchanged until the range ended in 1979. The 1970 model saw the introduction of the OLYMPIA logo in block capitals rather than script. My RSA qualified typist tester said it has the typical SM excellent feel, very even and light touch. They were always renowned for the sprung touch of the keys making them a nice typewriter to use for long periods. This typewriter has been carefully cleaned, lubricated and serviced and checked throughout. A new ribbon has been fitted and it is entirely ready to use. Once cleaned the stamps proved to be in good condition (there is a photo of the sharp typeface obtained). It has the QUERTY keyboard, check the photo of the keyboard. The keys are in black with very clear white symbols. There is a carriage lock, white 'key' on the front left of the keyboard. There is a typing 'strength' adjustment under the ribbon cover and to the left. The machine has full and easy to use tabulator function The machine has facility for black/red/stencil and a brand new black/red ribbon has been fitted. The machine is in white over grey base. There is some wear to the white paint of the cover at the ends of the keyboard, see picture. It is otherwise good. The case is original rigid in black and in excellent condition. The handle is good and the catch works as it should. These do not clip into the base, as earlier SM's, but sit into a moulded recess. There is an instruction book included, which does cover the tabulator function. NOTE: the case included one (grey) plastic locking tab for transit, this is in the RIGHT hand end of the carriage. Unlock the carriage and move to the RIGHT and remove the transit lock. The machine, cased, measures 40cm x 37cm x 17cm and weighs 9.7kg For more information please see Olympia SM9 – Typewriter Review Replacement ribbons are readily and cheaply available on ebay.
