Description: Authentic African dolls, whether for play or for magic have been created and used for centuries. Among the most famous of these dolls are the Akua’ba dolls of the Ashanti people in Ghana. Ashanti carvers allow themselves free reign in interpreting traditional elements; however, true Akua’ba dolls invariably have disc-shaped heads with high arched brows, a high forehead, and a straight nose. Akua’ba fertility Dolls are found among the Akan people of Ghana mainly the Fantis and Ashanti’s Traditionally Akua’ba fertility dolls were given to women as a fertility aid. Akuaba dolls were carried on the backs of women hoping to conceive or to ensure the attractiveness of the unborn child or used as preparation for young girls as they transition into adulthood. When not in use these dolls were carefully cared for and stored for traditional ceremonies. In modern times they are commonly regarded as a symbol of good luck.
