Description: This is a FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, second state, of The Troll Garden by Willa Sibert Cather. It is a hardcover with a *facsimile* (reproduction) first edition dust jacket which looks terrific. This was Cather's second book and her first short story collection. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1905. First edition, first printing, second state, with “Doubleday, Page & Co.” at the foot of the spine. The second state (also known as the second issue) came about after the 1906 dissolution of McClure, Phillips & Co., when Doubleday acquired the remainder of the first edition and issued the original sheets in a new binding with the Doubleday name at the foot of the spine. (Doubleday left the dust jacket unchanged and, thus, second issue jackets retained the McClure, Phillips & Co. name, even if the spine of the second issue book did not.) The book is in good to very good- condition but for the fact that the front free endpaper appears to have been removed, there is a prior owner’s name and gift inscription to the half-title page, the rear hinge is starting (there is an approximately 3” split to this hinge, yet the rear cover remains soundly attached), the corners and spine ends are bumped and worn (including a few spots of wear-through), the spine and boards are scuffed, rubbed, and lightly soiled in places, the gilt titles are darkened and have some loss of gilt, and there are a couple of tiny holes to the rear free endpapers. The interior pages otherwise are clean and lightly and evenly toned. Please see photographs as to condition. The dust jacket, as noted, is a facsimile (reproduction) of the first edition dust jacket.
