Description: A nice example of an originalWorld War TwoBritish Royal Observer CorpsQualification Citation Dated 1938 Established in 1925 as a Civilian Defence Forcefor the visual detection, identification, tracking & reporting of aircraft over Britain, The Royal Observer Corpsreally came in to its own with the approach of World War Twowhen on August 24th 1939 it was mobilised for action. Still composed of civilians & military veterans, the Battle of Britain in 1940 saw it play a vital role in the British Chain Home Radar System, with Spotters passing enemy aircraft numbers & types toRAF Fighter Command. After the Battle of Britain, women were enrolled into the ROC and both male & female spottersthen played a similarly vital role later in the war, reporting on German V-1 & V-2 German rockets being fired at London from France & The Low Countries during the 2nd Blitz in 1944. D-Day 6th June 1944 also saw Royal Observer Corps personnel in action, when some 796 ROC members were recruited to act as Seaborne Observers duringthe Allied coastal assault on the beaches of Normandy. The ROC was finally stood down in May 1945 (after 6 long years of civilian service to the war effort) ,when confirmation was finally received that the Luftwaffe had ceased all combat operations In a superb, very clean, surviving condition, (apart from a small crease running down the right-hand side)and measuring approx 8" x 6.5"this citation confirming status as'a qualified member of Observer Corps Special Constables'was issued toMajor J K Jeans M.C,of the village ofBroad Chalk in Wiltshire, dated August 1938 A most interesting artefact from Wiltshire's WW-II Home Front (B/W Image courtesy of The Tomahawk Films WW-II Archive) Thanks for looking..!
