Description: Original WW2 SECRET MAPS of "LAMPEDUSA ISLAND" - an ITALIAN GARRISON ISLAND halfway between MALTA and the TUNISIAN COAST. The maps consist of a "SECRET" photo-mosaic and a more typical topographical map which is also marked "SECRET", and features the main targets of interest on the island. They were produced on a single linen backed sheet from information provided by HQ RAF Middle East, and were clearly intended for use during the 'mop up' phase of "OPERATION CORKSCREW". OPERATION CORKSCREW was a necessary precursor to "OPERATION HUSKY" (The Allied Invasion of Sicily) as it sought to neutralise the threat from a small number of Italian Islands in the Mediterranean which could provide resistance to "HUSKY". The main threat was considered to be from the Island of PANTELLERIA further North, but LAMPEDUSA had a decent sea port and a fully operational aerodrome. As it happens, the Italians stationed at PANTELLERIA sought permission to surrender prior to the attack, and in the days that followed, LAMPEDUSA followed suit surrendering without a fight. The maps were then retained officially just a few days later, hence the "GHQ Middle East" ink stamp of 16th June 1943. This sheet would have been produced in very small numbers, and given that it was retained officially, this may be the only surviving example. Measures 43cm x 31cm.
